August 17, 12:02 PM - Christian Living Examiner - by Joanne Brokaw
The press release for the DVD of the movie "The Board" promotes the film as having "the elements of life-transforming films such as 'Chariots of Fire' and 'Fireproof'."
I haven't seen "Fireproof", mainly because I've already seen Kirk Cameron act in a Christian film; once you’ve seen 'em you've seen what you need to see, right? But I have seen "Chariots of Fire," and "The Board" isn't really much like "Chariots of Fire."
When I sat down to watch the movie, I was all ready toying with some puns about "the Board" and "bored" that I could use in my review, but fortunately I didn't need them. That's because "The Board," the 30 minute film short produced by folks from Indiana's Bethesda Baptist Church, is a high quality piece, and it has its place in the Christian film genre.
But it's more of a church tool than a movie.
The film tells the story of a fictional board of directors, made up of one man's Mind, Will, Emotion, Memory, Conscience, and Heart, and follows the group as they make the decision to follow Jesus based on conversations they're having with a coworker named Ray. In essence, the group represents the soul of man.
It's a very clever analogy, and the production is really top notch for such a small budget film. It has the feel of "12 Angry Men" but there's no question that the goal of the movie is to convince the viewer to make a decision to follow Jesus.
I have no doubt that churches will snap up the DVD and use it in Bible studies, Sunday sermons, and outreach events. And that's really where it belongs. It's well done, and for a viewer interested in the process of how people might work through their response to the gospel, it's very thought provoking. It would be interesting to see this same talent put into a film that wasn't so message-oriented. Sometimes the most powerful movies are the ones that tell a personal story without such a clear agenda.
The film is the product of a volunteer team from Bethesda Baptist Church, using hundreds of dollars of equipment donated from Wexler Studios in California. The film is directed by Brett Varvel, a two-time Dave Letterman scholarship winner to Ball State University and a regional Emmy Award winner. Brett also plays Mr. Heart in the film. The cast includes Brett's father, Gary Varvel, editorial cartoonist for the Indianapolis Star, as Mr. Will. Two other characters share the Varvel name, Mr. Emotion, played by Drew Varvel, and Mr. Mind, played by Terry Varvel. Mr. Memory is played by Bruce Crum, and Mr. Conscience is played by Daron Day (who looks a bit like Neil Patrick Harris).

Attached is a handout that I believe the 1st impressions group was referring to. Michael, I watched the Board... very well done. Good story, excellent cinematography, and good acting. My kind of movie... short and to the point. The church did a Great job! Another victory for God.
